Tottenham Hotspur’s survival hopes have taken a big hit after their captain, Cristian Romero, was ruled out. The update was confirmed by Fabrizio Romano on his official X handle.
Fabrizio Romano reported;
BREAKING: Cuti Romero’s season with Tottenham, almost over as he’s gonna be out for 6-8 weeks.
Romero suffered a medial collateral ligament injury.
He’s expected to be fit and available for the World Cup 2026 with Argentina.

Tottenham suffered a huge blow after Cristian Romero picked up an injury in a painful 1-0 loss to Sunderland. The defender was clearly emotional as he left the pitch in tears. The injury happened after a heavy collision with his own goalkeeper, Antonín Kinský. It was a moment that summed up a very difficult season for the club.
The injury was described as a “high-grade partial tear” of his medial ligament. Tottenham are now in a very dangerous position in the league table. Softfootball believes this absence will be felt far beyond the pitch, as the squad loses its most vocal leader. They are 18th and just two points away from safety with only six matches left.

Because of this crisis, the club is already planning for the summer. Reports say Tottenham has a verbal agreement to sign Andy Robertson from Liverpool. However, the move will only happen if they stay in the Premier League. Robertson is open to joining Roberto De Zerbi, but only if the club avoids relegation.
There is still a small positive for Romero. His recovery is expected to take six to eight weeks. This could allow him to return in time for Argentina at the FIFA World Cup. For Tottenham, losing their “most important player” now could decide their season.
