Arsenal Edge Sporting CP as Fans Praise Havertz and Raya

Arsenal may not have produced their most convincing football in Lisbon, but they still got the one thing that mattered most the win. The Gunners edged Sporting CP 1–0 away from home in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final, with Kai Havertz coming up big late on to hand Arsenal a crucial advantage ahead of the return leg in London.

UEFA’s match report confirmed the decisive moment came in stoppage time, with Havertz finishing to give Arsenal the breakthrough after a tense and controlled contest.

That narrow victory felt even bigger because Arsenal came into the game under real pressure. Just days earlier, they were stunned in the FA Cup by Southampton, a defeat many fans saw as another painful collapse in a season full of promise.

Before that, they had also lost the Carabao Cup final 2–0 to Manchester City, with Nico O’Reilly scoring twice to crush another trophy hope. Those two setbacks made this result feel less like a simple away win and more like a badly needed emotional response.

And as expected, Arsenal fans had plenty to say after the final whistle.

Oluwakayode tried to keep things balanced, praising the result without pretending the performance was perfect. He wrote:

“Not a bad performance away from home, against a club who hasn’t lost at home this season. But obviously Arsenal must part ways with most of these players, they’re good enough to play for this club…”

That reaction summed up the strange feeling many supporters had relief at the result, but still concern about the level.

Marco focused more on what comes next, especially with the second leg still to come. He said:

“Thank you Havertz. Even though it wasn’t a great game, we won, but I hope it won’t be the same in London, we have to prove that we want to win the Champions League this year. Now it’s time to beat Bournemouth this Saturday.”

That one clearly captured the mood of fans who are happy with the edge Arsenal showed, but still want more authority and quality in the performance.

One of the strongest reactions came from Muslimanah, who was full of praise for goalkeeper David Raya after another huge save. She posted:

“That save was insane. David Raya didn’t just stop a goal, he stopped destiny itself. At this point, if anything happens globally, just put him in goal. He might even save Iran from missiles.”

It was obviously dramatic, but it reflected just how important Raya was on the night.

LBK went with pure confidence and identity, posting:

“We are the Gunners of London. Clock it.”

Short, bold, and exactly the kind of statement fans love after a gritty European away win.

Soccer gave a more tactical fan reaction and made sure to shout out the game-changers from the bench. He wrote:

“Amazing away win. That performance was nothing to write home about. Kudos to the subs (Martinelli and Havertz). Hopefully we can build on this next week. COYG!”

That was a common theme after the game Arsenal were not brilliant, but the substitutes made the difference. That same point was echoed by Whatstrending, who said:

“Once again, the bench runs the street and keeps Arsenal in an advantage position ahead of the second leg.”

It was a fun way of saying Arsenal’s depth may end up being one of their biggest weapons in Europe this season.

Paskal and Kabal both looked at the result through the lens of Arsenal’s recent emotional setbacks. Their reaction was almost identical:

“Not just the point but the mental strength, this victory will spur Arsenal further after a devastating outing against City and Southampton.”

And honestly, that might be one of the most accurate takes of the night. This was not just about tactics or quality it was about Arsenal proving they could steady themselves after two painful blows.

Okechukwu made perhaps the sharpest comparison of all, saying:

“No Arsenal fan we agree that Arsenal seen tonight was the same as Arsenal that played Carabao Cup final was the same Arsenal Southampton eliminate at FA Cup. Tonight the real Arsenal is seen. Well done guys.”

His point was clear: this looked like a team with more maturity, control, and fight than the one fans had watched unravel recently.

Fifekitchen also made sure the big names got their flowers, writing:

“Thanks to Kai Havertz for coming to the rescue yet again. And Raya shows the difference yet again between the pole. We deal it at the Emirates.”

That post reflected the growing belief among some fans that Arsenal now have players who can rescue ugly nights.

De Real kept it simple and emotional with:

“We did it boys. Super Kai Havertz.”

Sometimes that is all fans want to say after a big European result.

Then there was Varzone, who added a wider football angle by comparing Arsenal’s night to another major European result. He posted:

“Full time. Real Madrid fall short. Arsenal edge it. Two very different games… One game opened too much, the other stayed controlled until it broke.”

That one stood out because it framed Arsenal’s win as something built on patience and control rather than chaos.

As Softfootball has also been highlighting in recent days, Arsenal’s season has started to feel like a test of mentality as much as talent.

The squad has taken hits, suffered painful losses, and seen trophy dreams crash in quick succession but this win over Sporting gave them something important back: belief. It was not flashy. It was not dominant. But it may turn out to be one of those nights Arsenal fans look back on and say, that was the night the mood changed.
