With the United States President Donald Trump in attendance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey watching, Chelsea demolished Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to win the newly expanded FIFA Club World Cup, Softfootball can report.
The Blues led by the much underrated Enzo Maresca hammered the UEFA Champions League winners 3-0 with a brace from Cole Palmer while new signing Joao Pedro added his name to the score sheet.
Pundits, fans and neutrals were shocked at the outcome of the result and hold back from expressing how surprised they are with the result because PSG were the overwhelming favourites heading into the game. Reactions flooded the BBC Sport live coverage of the pulsating encounter.
Charles texting in from Johannesburg, South Africa wrote:
“Tactical masterclass by Enzo Maresca executed to perfection. No playing from the back nonsense, just simple basic press and old fashioned long balls.”
Another fan, Phil from London stated after Cole Palmer scored:
“Palmer is going to win the Ballon d’Or next year. Class above every other player out there right now.”
Giray from Belgravia wrote:
“25/26 Premier League champions in the making!”
As noted in a Facebook post by Softfootball following the match:
“Three massive milestones already checked off in Enzo Maresca’s first season. The Enzo Era is off to a flying start! 💙”
The reaction from Chelsea fans was electric, with many hailing the 3-0 win over PSG as a turning point under Maresca’s leadership.
Softfootball reported earlier that Cole Palmer was confident of a Chelsea win over PSG in the Club World Cup final and that is exactly what happened and the England international player a key role in making it happen with two goals.
Despite being a Manchester United fan, Palmer played his academy football for its city rivals Manchester City. And because of lack of first team chance he moved to Chelsea in the 2023/24 season on a seven-year contract, with the option of a further year.
The transfer fee was reported to be an initial £40 million, potentially rising by £2.5 million in add-ons. He is arguably Chelsea’s best player since then.
Chelsea won the UEFA Conference League with a comprehensive victory over Real Betis in the final and finished fourth in the Premier League.
