Manchester United are preparing to welcome Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha after reaching an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers. The club confirmed the transfer on social media, stating that it marks their first signing of the summer, though it still awaits visa clearance and registration.
Cunha’s move to Old Trafford follows Manchester United activating a £62.5 million release clause in his contract. The final agreement was delayed by negotiation over payment structure, but terms have now been settled between both clubs.
The 25-year-old is expected to wear the number 10 shirt, previously associated with Marcus Rashford. His performances at Wolves earned him widespread interest, with his dynamic playstyle making him a top target for United.
While fans are optimistic, some former players are cautious. Ex-United midfielder Gordon Strachan expressed concerns about where Cunha will fit into manager Ruben Amorim’s tactical setup. Strachan questioned how the 3-4-3 system would accommodate the forward and suggested Cunha might not thrive alone up front.
Strachan also mentioned that Ipswich striker Liam Delap could have complemented Cunha well, praising Delap’s hunger and physical style. However, Delap is now heading to Chelsea, leaving United to seek another forward to partner with Cunha.
On a more confident note, Gary Neville believes the signing is exactly what Manchester United need. With Jadon Sancho, Antony, and Marcus Rashford moving on, and Garnacho the only option on the wing, Neville feels Cunha’s direct running and creativity through the middle can reinvigorate the attack under Amorim’s leadership.
The coming weeks will be crucial as United look to strengthen their squad further and figure out how to integrate Cunha into a cohesive attacking unit.
