Manchester United hope to sign Sesko despite Arsenal lead

Manchester United are still pursuing RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, even as Arsenal appear to be leading the chase for the highly-rated forward. The 21-year-old has become one of Europe’s most in-demand talents and is widely expected to leave Leipzig this summer, with a transfer fee of around £85 million anticipated.

Arsenal have identified Sesko as their primary attacking target for next season. Manager Mikel Arteta reportedly views the Slovenian as a better fit than other candidates like Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres, and the Gunners have already held concrete discussions this week to push a deal forward.

United, however, remain firmly interested and believe they might have a unique advantage in the form of their director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell. The German scout played a crucial role in Sesko’s early career, having discovered him in Slovenia and bringing him to Red Bull Salzburg back in 2019. Vivell’s history with Sesko could be a factor in tipping the balance, despite United’s failure to secure Champions League football.

The Red Devils were recently beaten to the signing of Liam Delap, who chose Chelsea over United. Their absence from Europe’s top competition is likely to hinder several potential signings this summer, and Sesko may also prefer a club playing at the highest level — giving Arsenal a clear edge after another strong Premier League campaign and a Champions League semi-final appearance.

Still, United’s interest remains strong. Vivell has continued monitoring Sesko’s progress closely, including attending Leipzig’s game against Wolfsburg in April. The striker’s performances since joining Leipzig in 2023 have only reinforced his reputation as a top prospect.

Arsenal continue to push hard for a deal, but Manchester United are not out of the picture yet — especially if Vivell can use his long-standing connection to influence the striker’s decision.
