Manchester United eye Pedro Goncalves as Fernandes backup

Pedro Goncalves has emerged as a key target for Manchester United as the club prepares for the potential departure of captain Bruno Fernandes. The Sporting CP star is under serious consideration, with the Red Devils weighing up their options ahead of what could be a significant midfield shake-up this summer.

United may move for Goncalves even if Fernandes stays. Manager Ruben Amorim is keen to reinforce attacking depth, with several key players like Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, and Antony potentially heading for the exit. However, Sporting are reluctant to lose Goncalves and intend to offer him a new deal, although the player is reportedly waiting to see how things develop.

Fernandes is currently mulling over a lucrative proposal from Saudi side Al-Hilal. Reports suggest the club is willing to spend up to £100 million for the Portugal international, while also offering to triple his current wages of £250,000 per week. His representatives recently met with Al-Hilal officials, and a decision on his future is expected soon.

The release clause in Goncalves’ contract stands at €80 million (£67m), which Sporting expect to be paid in full. Though they are prepared to sell striker Viktor Gyokeres, the club has no intention of negotiating a reduced price for Goncalves, who has been a consistent performer on the left flank and in midfield since his return to Portugal in 2019.

On Friday, Fernandes featured in United’s final post-season friendly — a match that might have marked his last appearance for the club. Despite the mounting speculation, Amorim remains hopeful that United’s captain will remain at Old Trafford and help drive change within the squad next season.

Meanwhile, Al-Hilal want to wrap up the deal for Fernandes before the Club World Cup campaign begins in June, indicating their urgency to secure his services quickly.

Stay tuned for more updates as United explore their transfer strategy and consider contingency plans ahead of the summer window.
