Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole believes Chelsea are set to win the race for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap ahead of other Premier League suitors.
Delap, 22, impressed in his debut Premier League season after moving from Manchester City to Ipswich last year. Despite Ipswich’s relegation, the forward scored 12 goals and provided two assists in 36 appearances, attracting interest from top clubs.

A relegation release clause in Delap’s contract allows him to be signed for just £30 million, putting him on the radar of Chelsea, Manchester United, Newcastle, and Everton. Initially, Manchester United seemed the most likely destination, but recent reports suggest Chelsea have moved to the front of the queue for the England Under-21 international.
Chelsea’s attacking targets were discussed on TNT Sports following their Europa Conference League victory. West Ham striker Michail Antonio highlighted Delap as an ideal signing, praising his strength and goal-scoring instincts, calling him “an old-school number nine.” Former Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell compared Delap’s style to a young Alan Shearer, emphasizing his robustness and natural finishing ability.
Joe Cole added, “I’d actually be stunned if he isn’t at Chelsea.”
Meanwhile, John Terry offered a different perspective, suggesting Chelsea should seek a more experienced striker, but acknowledged the club’s preference for younger talent fits with Delap’s profile.
Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna acknowledged the likelihood of Delap moving on this summer, noting the striker is exploring his options amid interest from several clubs. McKenna said, “It looks more likely than not that he will move on this summer… but nothing is sorted or done yet.”
With Chelsea looking to strengthen their frontline, Delap could be a key addition to Enzo Maresca’s squad next season.
