Barcelona have opened discussions with Thomas Partey’s representatives as they attempt to bring the Arsenal midfielder to La Liga this summer. The Ghana international is now in the final month of his contract, with no renewal yet agreed.
Despite Arsenal’s interest in keeping him, Partey appears open to exploring options abroad. Manager Mikel Arteta has spoken highly of the 31-year-old, calling this his most consistent season since arriving at the Emirates. Partey missed just three Premier League games and played a major role in Arsenal’s run to the Champions League semi-finals.
Arteta is keen to retain Partey’s services even after securing the signing of Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. Following Jorginho’s exit, Partey’s presence is viewed as vital to maintaining stability in midfield.
However, contract talks have stalled, and Partey’s camp is exploring potential moves. Barcelona boss Hansi Flick is reportedly a long-time admirer and has given the green light to pursue the former Atletico Madrid star.
Though discussions with Barca are ongoing, convincing Partey to leave may not be easy. He is said to be happy in London, respects the club, and enjoys playing under Arteta. A source close to the situation noted that Partey still hopes for a new deal that reflects his value at the club.
Barcelona face competition for his signature, with interest also coming from Atletico Madrid, Juventus, and Besiktas, now managed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Partey, who joined Arsenal in a £45 million deal in 2021, has made 167 appearances for the Gunners. If he stays, he’ll be part of a midfield group that includes the newly signed Zubimendi, while the club also targets a new striker. Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko are top priorities, though Chelsea appear to have edged Arsenal in the chase for Ipswich’s Liam Delap.
As the summer window heats up, Arsenal must decide whether to secure Partey’s future or let him walk for free.
