Antonio Conte has chosen to remain at Napoli, turning down interest from Juventus despite leading the club to a Serie A title this season. Now, with the summer transfer window opening on June 1, the former Chelsea manager expects the club to back him with major signings.
Conte has specifically targeted striker Viktor Gyokeres, a highly sought-after forward from Sporting Lisbon. Conte wants Napoli to outbid rivals Manchester United and Arsenal for the 26-year-old striker, even though Romelu Lukaku already plays up front.
Gyokeres has built an impressive record over the last two seasons, scoring 97 goals in 104 appearances for Sporting Lisbon. His performances have attracted top clubs across Europe, with Manchester United long linked to a move for the prolific forward.
The striker thrived under Ruben Amorim at Sporting, but the coach’s move to Manchester United has not convinced Gyokeres to join the struggling Premier League side. United finished 15th last season and missed out on European football after losing the Europa League final.
Meanwhile, Arsenal has made a £58 million bid to sign Gyokeres, hoping to strengthen their attack under Mikel Arteta. However, the Gunners might turn their attention to RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko, who could cost nearly £100 million.
Chelsea were also rumored to be interested but have shifted focus after securing Liam Delap from Ipswich Town for £30 million, ending their pursuit of Gyokeres.
Despite all the transfer buzz, Gyokeres’ family recently indicated he might stay at Sporting Lisbon for another season. His uncle praised the club’s environment and the strong bond Viktor shares with the team and fans.
Before joining Sporting in 2023, Gyokeres gained experience with English clubs Coventry City, Swansea City, and West Brom. Now the race is on for Napoli to strengthen their squad with the highly rated striker Conte desires.
