Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has made it clear that the club’s Premier League form will take a back seat as he targets Europa League success following a dramatic quarter-final victory over Lyon. Despite trailing 6-4 on aggregate deep into extra time at Old Trafford, United pulled off a stunning late comeback to win 7-6 overall, with Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, and Harry Maguire scoring within seven minutes to send the home crowd into raptures.

The win ensures United a place in the semi-finals, where they will face Athletic Bilbao, and offers a potential route back into the Champions League, despite their current struggles in the league. The Red Devils are languishing in 14th place, and Amorim admits league performances may suffer as a result of his strategy to keep key players fresh for Europe.

At the weekend, United’s rotated side suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat to Newcastle at St James’ Park—a result Amorim says fans should expect more of. Speaking after the Europa League thriller, the Portuguese coach explained that his priorities are now firmly set. “We have to take a risk with the kids in the Premier League,” he told TNT Sports. “We must be focused on the Europa League and the fans have to understand.”

Former club legend Rio Ferdinand backed Amorim’s decision, emphasizing the importance of physical readiness for high-stakes European fixtures. “Get your experienced players back, and they’ll be in a strong place,” said Ferdinand, supporting the manager’s approach.

Amorim, reflecting on the emotional win, believes the way United clawed their way back from the brink could be a turning point. “These kinds of moments can change everything,” he said. “It’s not just about tactics or fitness—it’s about belief.”

He’s confident his side can now go all the way in the competition. “You could feel it in the stadium. Everyone believes. The sound when Maguire and Kobbie scored—that was the best I’ve ever heard. The fans are crazy, and now they believe anything is possible.”

With silverware and a Champions League spot on the line, Amorim is going all-in on Europe—even if the domestic price is high.
