This development comes after current Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali became a free agent following his departure from Chippa United.

Nwabali reportedly left the South African side after both parties reached a mutual agreement. According to reports, the goalkeeper formally submitted a request to leave the club, which was later approved.

The shot-stopper ends his time at Chippa United after making 76 appearances and recording 25 clean sheets, marking the end of a significant spell with the club.

His current status without a team has created uncertainty around Nigeria’s goalkeeping position, which had enjoyed a level of stability in recent years with Nwabali as the preferred option.

Meanwhile, there are unverified reports suggesting that Arthur Okonkwo, who as of March 7, 2026 plays for Wrexham AFC in the EFL Championship, could be considering switching nationality to represent Nigeria.

However, Softfootball has not yet confirmed these reports regarding the goalkeeper’s international future.

If confirmed, Okonkwo’s eligibility could potentially strengthen Nigeria’s goalkeeping options, but for now the immediate question remains who will take the number one role for the Super Eagles while Nwabali searches for his next club.
