Ibrahima Konaté has spoken up about the noise around his future, and honestly, he sounded a bit tired of it. The Liverpool defender, whose deal runs out in June 2026, said some reports flying around lately are simply not true. While speaking during the November international break before France’s World Cup qualifier against Azerbaijan, the centre back stressed that both he and his agents are still in talks with Liverpool, but nothing has been agreed.
Konaté dismissed suggestions that Liverpool had already sent him a shiny new offer, saying in a post shared by Fabrizio Romano on his official X account:
I’ve seen a lot of things in the press recently. I don’t know where that’s coming from. My agents are continuing discussions with Liverpool and I hope my decision will be made very soon so I can announce it.
His comments came just days after SoftFootball covered Liverpool’s heavy defeat at the Etihad. For now, the whole situation feels a bit open-ended. Liverpool want clarity, Konaté wants clarity and, honestly, everybody involved probably wants this thing wrapped up as quickly as possible.
Because once January 1 arrives, he can sign a pre-contract with any foreign club, and that’s why Real Madrid and PSG are already hovering. Madrid, in particular, are still rebuilding their defence after grabbing Trent Alexander-Arnold earlier in the summer, so Konaté being available without an immediate fee will surely tempt them.
His form hasn’t helped either. The defender was shaky in Liverpool’s 3–0 loss to Manchester City, missing a key interception and losing out to Erling Haaland for the opener. He also didn’t start France’s 4–0 win over Ukraine, raising more questions about consistency.
Still, Konaté remains a solid defender with big-match experience, and Liverpool know his ceiling is high. So until he announces his final choice, everything stays wide open.
