Is Ange Postecoglou’s Nottingham Forest Appointment the Worst of All Time?

4 Min Read

When Nottingham Forest announced Ange Postecoglou as their new manager in early September, the reaction was mixed but optimistic. Here was a coach known for his attacking football and fearless mentality, taking over a team that had just parted ways with Nuno Espírito Santo, a manager who had led them to one of their best seasons in recent memory, Softfootball reports.

On paper, it looked like a bold move from the club’s hierarchy, a statement of ambition. But in reality, it turned out to be a disaster of historic proportions.

Postecoglou arrived at the City Ground with a solid reputation. He had impressed with his tactical philosophy at Celtic and initially at Tottenham, earning plaudits for bringing an exciting, high-tempo style of play. Forest’s owner believed he was the man to take the club into a new era, a coach with a winning mindset and attacking flair. However, within just over a month, that optimism had completely evaporated.

The Australian’s tenure at Nottingham Forest lasted a total of eight matches and he didn’t win a single one. Under his watch, the team struggled to adapt to his expansive tactical demands, often leaving gaps in midfield and looking exposed at the back. The results were grim, a mix of frustrating draws and heavy defeats that sapped morale both in the dressing room and among supporters.

The final blow came in front of the home crowd at the City Ground, where Forest were humbled 3-0 by Chelsea. The performance summed up everything that had gone wrong under Postecoglou — disjointed pressing, defensive frailty, and a lack of belief. Hours after the final whistle, the club confirmed his dismissal, ending one of the shortest managerial reigns in Premier League history.

It’s hard to recall a managerial appointment that unraveled so quickly and so completely. Postecoglou’s attacking philosophy simply didn’t fit the players he inherited, many of whom had been molded under Nuno’s more compact and disciplined system. The board’s gamble to change course so drastically backfired, leaving the club in turmoil just weeks into the new campaign.

After the sacking of Ange postegoclou, softfootball reported that the club has appointed a popular figure in the premier league to take over the reigns Sean Dyche, who was famously known for his time at Burnley, even guiding them to a similar feat Nuno Espirito Santos did with the tricky trees.

Nottingham forest via their official X handle shared an exclusive video of the former youth player and now Manager Sean dyche speaking ahead of his debut for the club as they prepare to host Porto in the UEFA Europa league. They posted;

Was it the worst appointment of all time? That’s debatable, football has seen many managerial missteps but it certainly ranks among the most ill-fated in Premier League memory. Forest moved from stability to chaos in less than two months, and Postecoglou’s brief, winless spell will go down as a cautionary tale about the dangers of change for change’s sake.
