Szoboszlai’s Thunderbolt Free-Kick Lifts Liverpool Past Arsenal at Anfield

Liverpool took all three points against Arsenal, beating them 1-0 at Anfield thanks to a thunderbolt from Dominik Szoboszlai, who curled in a free kick from over 32 yards to settle what can best be described as a cagey contest. It was the longest strike of the Premier League season so far and the first direct free-kick in this fixture since 2016.

The match itself was tight, with neither side giving much away. Arsenal were dealt a massive blow inside the opening minutes when William Saliba could not continue; the situation forced Mikel Arteta to turn to Cristhian Mosquera, who made a good account of himself.

Despite the home advantage, Softfootball reports that it was the visitors who created the first real chance through Noni Madueke, whose effort was well saved by Alisson. Liverpool threatened briefly when Virgil van Dijk pounced on a loose pass from David Raya, but the opportunity fizzled out. Arsenal looked to their set-piece strength, no team in Europe’s top five leagues has scored more corners since 2023, yet the hosts stood firm.

After the interval, Liverpool thought they had the lead when Hugo Ekitike bundled in after Raya parried a shot from Florian Wirtz. The flag, however, was up for offside, silencing the away end.

With time running out, it was Szoboszlai who seized the spotlight. Playing out of position at right-back, the Hungarian had worked tirelessly to break up Arsenal’s rhythm, and his free-kick strike, bending over the wall and beyond Raya, proved unstoppable.

Liverpool will cherish these points, as it is against a direct rival in Arsenal, and even the club’s admin posted a video of the team’s reaction when the final whistle went off on Liverpool’s official X account, with people in particular celebrating with Szoboszlai.

The goal keeps Liverpool’s perfect start intact and marks their 37th consecutive league game with a goal, a new club record. For Arsenal, it’s a first league defeat in six against Liverpool and their first concession of the season, a setback that leaves them chasing early ground in the title race.
