Atletico Madrid targets Manchester United Winger Antony in surprise summer approach

Softfootball can reveal that Atletico Madrid have added Manchester United’s Antony to their shortlist of attacking targets for the 2025/26 season.

According to Peter Hall, a reporter for the Aipaper revealed on his X handle that the Spanish side has shown interest in bringing Antony to the Metropolitano stadium ahead of next season.

He wrote that.

“Understand Antony to Atletico is becoming a real possibility, with Sancho and Garnacho nearing exits too.

Once they’re out the door, let the #MUFC spending commence! Easy, right? 💸”

The Brazilian winger spent the second half of last season on loan in La Liga at Real Betis, where he rediscovered some of the form that once made him the most expensive signing in Manchester United’s history.

Antony recorded nine goals and five assists in 26 appearances for the Andalusian side, prompting renewed interest from LaLiga.

Atletico boss Diego Simeone is keen to bring in a dynamic wide player this summer and views Antony as a potential solution, particularly due to his ability to operate in one-on-one situations and stretch defensive lines.

The 24-year-old remains under contract at Old Trafford until 2027, but sources close to the player suggest a permanent departure could be on the cards if a suitable offer is made.

As earlier reported by Softfootball, Real Betis has also expressed a desire to re-sign the winger following his successful loan stint. However, financial constraints may make a return to Benito Villamarín more complicated unless United are open to another loan or a reduced fee.

Antony has endured a turbulent spell at Manchester United since his £85 million move from Ajax in 2022. While he showed flashes of brilliance under Erik ten Hag, inconsistency and a lack of end product saw him fall down the pecking order, leading to his loan exit last January.

With Manchester United undergoing a summer rebuild under new sporting leadership, Antony’s future remains uncertain. The Red Devils are believed to be open to offers but are unlikely to sanction a major loss on their investment unless compelled by Financial Fair Play considerations.
