Newcastle United have reportedly set their sights on Brentford striker Yoane Wissa as a possible boost to their attacking options. The 28-year-old is firmly on the Magpies’ radar after an impressive Premier League season, where he netted 19 goals and caught the attention of several top-flight clubs.

The Magpies are in the market for a striker, knowing that they could miss out on Eintracht Frankfurt forward Hugo Ekitike amid interest from Liverpool.

Softfootball understands that Brentford value the Congolese forward at around £40 million, and while no official approach has been made yet, early indications suggest Newcastle could open talks in the coming days.

Wissa is reportedly open to a move, and Newcastle are keen to secure a proven goalscorer to support their European ambitions. With Ekitike no longer a viable option, the focus has now firmly shifted to the Brentford star, whose pace, work rate and finishing ability have caught the attention of Eddie Howe’s staff.

Tottenham had also been interested in the forward but the arrival of Mohammed Kudus has lessened the need for the addition of Wissa. Nottingham Forest had a bid of around £25m turned down for Wissa earlier this window.

Brentford are highly unlikely to sell Wissa because his departure and that of Bryan Mbeumo would make it incredibly difficult for Brentford going into the new season.

Brentford have tried to pre-empt the developing issue by starting contract talks with the 28-year-old, who moved to west London in 2021 from French club Lorient.

However, sources have indicated that, as things stand, Wissa has no inclination to discuss improved terms and privately has made his intentions to explore options elsewhere clear.

All three interested clubs can offer him European football next season and it is understood agreeing personal terms, particularly with either Tottenham or Newcastle, will not be an issue.

No matter how Wissa’s future develops, it will be a challenging start for new boss Keith Andrews who is preparing for his first season as a manager at any level of professional football.
