His team had only struggled to qualify for the Round of 16 of the Club World Cup and were eventually knocked out by Brazilian side Fluminense in a 2-0 loss. Lautaro Martinez had called his teammates out after the loss for their nonchalance towards the games but has been hit back by teammates who did not feel comfortable by his statements.

Details of the meeting between Chivu and the players is yet to be known but it is believed Martinez was referring to Calhanoglu who missed the Fluminense game due to injury.

Club president, Beppe Marotta shares the same view as Martinez after he made confirmation of the statement in an interview. He said;

I interpret [Martinez’s] words positively, Lautaro as captain has highlighted some suppositions and some truths. One thing I always say, if a player wants to leave, it’s right that he goes. There is no one who has concretely expressed this intention, he was perhaps referring to Calhanoglu but it is part of the end-of-season dynamics that we have always faced calmly.

We will talk to Calhanoglu and we will deal with it in the best way for the interests of Inter and his team. This call from Lautaro is shared by the club, this must be the winning spirit that can take us far. Calhanoglu’s drop in interest? No, we must thank him for what he has done.

Calhanoglu’s situation with Inter Milan is being monitored by some Premier League clubs as reported by Softfootball earlier. Inter Milan are on the verge of losing midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu to Premier League sides this summer with Manchester United, Nottingham Forest, Fulham knocking.

The Turkish had joined Inter Milan in 2021 from city rivals AC Milan and has remained an important figure in the team that won the Serie A and Coppa Italia twice and reached the finals of the UEFA Champions league twice.
