Tottenham Hotspur have officially secured the permanent transfer of Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich, handing the young French forward a six-year contract that runs until 2031. The move follows a six-month loan spell in North London that saw the 20-year-old make a mixed impact.
Tel featured in 20 matches across all competitions during his stint, scoring three goals — two in the Premier League and one in the FA Cup. He appeared 13 times in the league, including 11 starts, and managed a single assist. Despite a quiet Europa League campaign, where he didn’t register a goal or assist in five appearances, Spurs have opted to invest in his long-term potential.
The deal, valued at just under £30 million, includes the initial £7.3 million loan fee Tottenham paid in January. Spurs beat out rival Premier League clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea, and Aston Villa to secure Tel’s signature earlier this year.
With Tel’s integration into English football already underway, Tottenham are confident he can grow into a key player as they return to the Champions League next season. His permanent arrival also marks the first signing under new head coach Thomas Frank, who succeeded Ange Postecoglou after the club’s Europa League triumph over Manchester United in Bilbao.
Tel’s permanent transfer could be the start of a busy window for Spurs. They’re reportedly targeting Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, a player familiar to Frank from their time together at the west London club. Manchester United have already had a £55m bid for Mbeumo rejected, but Tottenham remain hopeful that Frank’s influence can sway the attacker toward a move to north London.
Tel’s acquisition signals Spurs’ commitment to building a youthful, competitive squad under their new manager as they prepare for the challenges of European and domestic competition.
