Manchester City are set to launch an opening bid for Lyon midfielder Rayan Cherki as they aim to beat Manchester United and Liverpool in the race for the talented Frenchman. The 21-year-old is attracting attention from top European clubs following a standout season, during which he registered eight goals and 20 assists across all competitions.
Cherki has made it clear he intends to leave Lyon this summer, despite being under contract until 2026. With Premier League clubs circling, City have emerged as the front-runners, prioritizing the midfielder as a potential replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, who has departed at the end of the season.
Foot Mercato reports that City could submit a formal bid as early as next week. Pep Guardiola has already made moves behind the scenes, speaking to individuals close to the player, including former Lyon coach Pierre Sage. Although direct talks with Cherki are yet to occur, they are expected soon as City look to finalize the deal before the Club World Cup.
Initially targeting Florian Wirtz, City withdrew from that pursuit due to Bayer Leverkusen’s high demands. Liverpool have now stepped in with a £109 million offer for Wirtz, leaving Cherki as City’s more financially viable option. Lyon are reportedly seeking around €40 million (£33.7 million) for Cherki, who has just over a year remaining on his contract.
Despite earlier suggestions of a £19 million release clause, those claims appear unfounded. United, Liverpool, and Tottenham remain interested, but City’s proactive approach could prove decisive.
In parallel, City are also engaged in talks with AC Milan over Dutch midfielder Tijjani Reijnders. The Serie A side are holding out for close to £60 million after an impressive campaign from the 25-year-old.
With their midfield rebuild underway, City are moving swiftly to secure their top targets ahead of a busy summer transfer window.
