Liverpool are reportedly ready to swoop in on Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams, potentially derailing Arsenal’s efforts to sign him this summer. The Gunners have made attacking reinforcements a key priority after injuries to key players impacted their Premier League title race this season.

Arsenal had previously attempted to sign the 22-year-old following Spain’s successful Euro 2024 campaign but were unsuccessful. However, they’re expected to reignite their pursuit this summer. Andrea Berta, the club’s new sporting director, is said to have already engaged in talks to secure a deal for Williams, who has a €58 million (£48.4m) release clause in his current contract.

Despite this, former Liverpool midfielder Didi Hamann believes that Arsenal’s cautious approach in the transfer market could allow his former club to capitalize. “Arsenal have bought Declan Rice, but they haven’t followed that up with more big spending,” Hamann said. “That could open the door for Liverpool, and they’ve got a real chance of landing him.”

Williams has impressed this season with 11 goals and seven assists across all competitions, attracting attention from top European clubs, including Chelsea and Bayern Munich. However, despite the interest, Williams remains focused on his current project at Athletic Bilbao. Ahead of their Europa League semi-final against Manchester United, he emphasized his commitment to his club: “The dream is to lift the champion’s trophy at San Mamés. I’m 100% focused on reaching the final and winning it.”

While Liverpool may face competition, Williams’ performances this season make him a coveted asset, and his future remains uncertain, with no decision made on his next move just yet.
