Japan have taken control of Group D at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026 after securing an emphatic 5-0 victory over Zambia in their opening match.
The Japanese side sit top of the group with three points and a goal difference of +5, following a commanding performance that demonstrated their attacking strength. France occupy second place after beginning their campaign with a 2-0 win over Venezuela. Venezuela are third, while Zambia sit bottom after their heavy defeat.
With the first round of fixtures completed, the battle for qualification remains open, although Japan have given themselves an early advantage. France will look to maintain their momentum, while Venezuela and Zambia must respond in their upcoming matches to keep their hopes alive.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Flamingos are looking to recover from their disappointing start in Group B, where they suffered a 2-1 defeat to Poland. The result left the Nigerian youngsters needing a strong response in their remaining group fixtures.
Precious Oscar was introduced late in the contest as head coach Akeem Busari searched for a way back into the match. Nigeria eventually pulled a goal back through Oluebube Umejiaku in the 79th minute, with Kanyinsola Yusuf providing the assist, but the Flamingos could not find an equaliser.
Oscar’s involvement comes as Nigeria prepare to regroup and focus on their next challenge against Puerto Rico. The team will need greater composure in front of goal and improved defensive concentration to turn their campaign around.
While Japan and France have made positive starts in Group D, the opening results across the tournament underline how quickly fortunes can change. With more fixtures ahead, every team still has an opportunity to strengthen its position and pursue a place in the knockout stages.
