Nigeria’s hopes of securing places at two major continental youth and beach soccer competitions have suffered a major blow after the Super Sand Eagles and Golden Eaglets both failed to progress in their respective campaigns.
The Sand Eagles were eliminated from the 2026 Beach Soccer Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after suffering a 7-4 defeat to Ghana’s Black Sharks in the second leg in Keta, Ghana, on Sunday. The result handed Ghana a 10-7 aggregate victory over the two-legged tie, securing their place at the continental finals in Senegal.
Nigeria had entered the decisive encounter hoping to overturn the advantage after the first leg in Kaduna ended 3-3 in regulation time. However, Ghana proved too strong on home sand, delivering the result needed to eliminate their West African rivals.
The defeat represents another setback for the Sand Eagles, who have previously enjoyed success in African beach soccer but have struggled to maintain consistent results in recent years.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have also endured disappointment after failing to advance beyond the group stage of the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Championship in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The five-time FIFA U-17 World Cup champions were eliminated following a 1-1 draw against Côte d’Ivoire on Saturday. The result came after their 2-1 opening defeat to Niger Republic, leaving them with just one point from two matches and at the bottom of Group B.
The outcome also means Nigeria will miss the 2027 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations and the qualifying pathway to the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Together, the two exits highlight a difficult period for Nigerian football, with both teams needing to regroup and address their shortcomings ahead of future international competitions.
