Michael Carrick has responded to questions about Lisandro Martínez’s explosive interview following Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat to Atlético Madrid, admitting that the disappointment of the result made it an inappropriate moment to comment.
The Manchester United manager was asked about Martínez’s remarks after the match but explained that he had not watched the interview and did not want to draw conclusions without knowing exactly what the defender had said.
Speaking to CBS, Carrick made it clear that his immediate focus was on the disappointing result rather than the controversy surrounding the Argentine defender’s comments.

“I haven’t seen it. After a game like this we’re disappointed. Sometimes it can be a little bit emotional as well,”
Carrick explained.
He added that he would not discuss the matter without first watching the interview, suggesting that emotions following the defeat could influence how the situation was perceived.
I’ve not seen it, so now is not the right time for me to comment,
Carrick told CBS.
The comments came after Atlético Madrid secured a 2-0 victory over Manchester United, with Ademola Lookman finding the net to seal the Spanish side’s victory.
The defeat represented a disappointing outcome for United, who were unable to find a response against Diego Simeone’s team. Atlético Madrid capitalised on their opportunities, with Lookman’s goal providing the decisive moment as the Spanish side strengthened their position in the contest.
Meanwhile, Martínez’s interview has attracted attention, with Carrick’s response leaving questions about the defender’s remarks unanswered for the time being.
The United manager’s decision to reserve judgment until he has watched the interview suggests he wants to understand the full context before addressing the situation publicly.
For now, Manchester United must deal with the disappointment of their defeat, while further clarity on Martínez’s comments could emerge once Carrick has had an opportunity to review the interview.
