Atlético Madrid secured a 2-0 victory over Manchester United after Pablo Barrios scored early and Ademola Lookman added a second goal late in the match. United’s task became more difficult when Leny Yoro was sent off following a VAR review in the second half.
Solanke Strikes Late as Tottenham Hold Man United to 1-1 Draw remains another headline angle, but at the Metropolitano, Atlético took control from the opening minute. Barrios fired the hosts ahead after just one minute, finishing Álex Baena’s assist to give United an early setback.
Manchester United created opportunities to respond. Bryan Mbeumo forced Jan Oblak into a save in the first half, while Carlos Baleba also saw his header stopped by the Atlético goalkeeper. Alejandro Grimaldo struck the crossbar with a free kick, and Johnny Cardoso had a goal ruled out by VAR following a handball.
After the break, Julián Álvarez hit the post before United captain Bruno Fernandes tested Oblak and later struck the crossbar from distance. However, Yoro’s red card in the 74th minute left United with ten men.
Atlético took advantage five minutes later when Lookman finished from close range following a fast break. Jonathan David subsequently forced Senne Lammens into a save as the hosts looked for a third goal.
United pushed forward during the closing stages, but Oblak denied Matheus Cunha to preserve Atlético’s clean sheet. The result reflected Atlético’s clinical finishing and United’s inability to convert their chances.
