For Comoros, the upcoming Olympics 2028 qualifier against Nigeria is more than just a football match. It is an opportunity to measure their progress against the most successful women’s national team on the African continent.

Speaking during his pre-match press conference, Comoros head coach Youssouf Abdallah expressed gratitude for the reception his team received in Nigeria and described the encounter against the Super Falcons as a special moment for the development of women’s football in his country.

First, we would like to say thank you for welcoming us.

The Comoros coach acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge awaiting his players against the 10-time African champions but insisted his side would approach the contest with belief and determination.

To meet a big team like Nigeria is a big honour and a very big pleasure for us. We are conscious of how difficult it will be, but we are ready to give our best.

Rather than focusing on Nigeria’s reputation, Abdallah said his players are concentrating on executing their game plan and competing with passion.

We have our strategy and we are going to play this game with our hearts.

Despite being considered underdogs, Comoros are refusing to be intimidated by the occasion.

Asked how his team would react if they lost to the Super Falcons, Abdallah made it clear that his players are not travelling to Nigeria expecting defeat.

We don’t think about defeat. We are here for a serious game and we will do everything to win.

The coach stressed that football matches are decided on the pitch and not by reputation.

A match is never won until it is played.

Comoros captain Assimina Maoulida echoed that confidence, insisting the team intends to enjoy the occasion while expressing themselves against one of Africa’s football giants.

While Nigeria enters the tie as overwhelming favourites, Comoros believe that expectation creates pressure for the Super Falcons rather than themselves.

We have a different view. It’s a football match. We are here to express ourselves and have a good performance.

The coach added that his team intends to play with freedom and embrace the challenge.

There is no specific pressure on us. We are just here to play and see what happens.

Perhaps the most revealing moment of the press conference came when Abdallah was asked about the significance of facing Nigeria.

The coach described the fixture as a landmark moment for women’s football in Comoros and believes the experience will benefit the team regardless of the final result.

For us, it’s a big deal to play Nigeria because they are the best team in Africa.

He went on to explain that the match represents an important step in the growth of the sport in Comoros.

Whatever happens, there will be a before and after this match because it is part of our development and improvement.

For a nation still building its presence in women’s football, facing the Super Falcons is an occasion Abdallah believes will inspire future generations.

Playing against Nigeria is something like a dream for us.

While Nigeria remains the clear favourite to progress, Comoros’ coach and players are embracing the opportunity to compete, learn and test themselves against one of Africa’s most decorated teams as they continue their journey in the Olympics 2028 qualifiers.
