Al-Ittihad have officially announced the signing of Georginio Wijnaldum during the summer transfer window, completing the Dutch midfielder’s return to the Saudi Pro League after his departure from Al-Ettifaq.
The Saudi transfer window officially closed on Sunday evening, with Al-Ittihad confirming Wijnaldum’s arrival as one of their latest additions to the squad.
Softfootball reported back in April 2026 that Wijnaldum was set to leave Al-Ettifaq at the end of the 2025/26 season when his contract expired on June 30, bringing his three-year spell with the club to an end.
The 35-year-old has now opted to remain in Saudi Arabia rather than return to Europe, putting pen to paper on a one-year contract with Al-Ittihad.
The move was officially confirmed by Al-Ittihad on their social media platforms, with the club publishing a picture of Wijnaldum alongside the message: “The Dutchman Wijnaldum joins Al-Ittihad for one sporting season.”
Wijnaldum arrives at Al-Ittihad as a free agent following the expiration of his Al-Ettifaq contract, meaning the Saudi giants have secured an experienced midfielder without having to negotiate a transfer fee with his former club.
The Netherlands international brings considerable experience to his new team, having enjoyed a distinguished career across some of Europe’s biggest clubs.
Before moving to Saudi Arabia, Wijnaldum represented Paris Saint-Germain and Liverpool, with his time at Anfield particularly memorable. He played an important role in Liverpool’s midfield during their successful period under Jürgen Klopp and helped the club win major honours.
His experience in the Saudi Pro League could now prove particularly valuable at Al-Ittihad.
Although Wijnaldum left Al-Ettifaq after his contract expired, his previous three seasons in the Roshn League mean he already understands the competition, its playing environment and the demands of life in Saudi Arabia.
That familiarity could allow him to settle quickly at Al-Ittihad rather than requiring an extended adaptation period.
At 35, Wijnaldum is entering the latest stage of his career, but his experience, tactical understanding and knowledge of the Saudi league could make him a useful addition to Al-Ittihad’s midfield options.
His arrival also gives the club another player with experience at the highest level of European football, something that could prove important as they pursue their domestic ambitions.
For Wijnaldum, the move represents another chapter in his Saudi Arabian adventure. After spending three years with Al-Ettifaq, the Dutchman will now remain in the country but take on a new challenge with Al-Ittihad.
