Softfootball can confirm Aston Villa have reached a verbal agreement with SC Freiburg to sign highly-rated midfielder Johan Manzambi in a deal worth slightly more than €60 million.
The Premier League club have also agreed personal terms with the player and his representatives, with a long-term contract already in place ahead of the move.
Villa successfully hijacked the transfer after accelerating negotiations, moving ahead of Newcastle United in the race for the Freiburg star.
Newcastle had established initial contact with the Bundesliga club and were preparing to submit an opening official bid, but Aston Villa acted decisively to secure an agreement before the Magpies could formalise their interest.
Barring any late complications, Manzambi is now expected to become Aston Villa’s latest major signing as Unai Emery continues to strengthen his squad ahead of the new season.
