Lazio have opened talks over the signing of Dutch centre-back Danilho Doekhi, with the defender available on a free transfer following his exit from Bundesliga side Union Berlin. The Serie A club have identified Doekhi as a key defensive target, with his availability presenting an opportunity to add proven top-flight experience without paying a transfer fee.
Earlier, Softfootball reported that Union Berlin had confirmed Doekhi’s departure after the expiration of his contract. The Dutch defender attracted interest from several clubs after another impressive season in Germany, where he established himself as one of the Bundesliga side’s most dependable performers.
Doekhi initially joined Union Berlin on 16 May 2022, with his transfer officially taking effect on 1 July 2022. During his time at the club, he earned plaudits for his commanding aerial presence, physical strength, composure on the ball, and consistent defensive displays.
Lazio believe the 27-year-old possesses the experience and leadership qualities needed to reinforce their backline ahead of the new campaign. Signing a player of his calibre without a transfer fee would also allow the club to allocate more resources to strengthening other areas of the squad.

Supporters have reacted positively to the reported interest, with many describing the potential signing as smart business. Fans believe Doekhi’s quality, combined with the absence of a transfer fee, could make him one of the bargain acquisitions of the summer should Lazio successfully complete the deal.
