Angel Di Maria has identified who he thinks should eventually fill his boots in the Argentina squad and the answer isn’t a household name yet.
The World Cup winner named Leicester City’s Facundo Buonanotte as a player capable of stepping into the role he vacated after retiring from international football.
Softfootball reports that Di Maria, who won two Copa America titles and the 2022 World Cup before stepping away from the national team, pointed specifically to Buonanotte’s quality when asked to name a successor:
There are players with a lot of quality, and I like Buonanotte. It’s not easy to get into the national team, but he’s a player I like. I think he can give a lot to the team.
Buonanotte has settled into life at Leicester since his move to England, and an endorsement of this weight from a World Cup-winning veteran could go a long way toward strengthening his case for future Argentina call-ups.
