Brazil national football team will look to build momentum and excitement ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup when they host Panama national football team in an international friendly at the iconic Maracana Stadium on Sunday night.

The match comes during a challenging period for Brazil despite the arrival of legendary coach Carlo Ancelotti, who recently signed a long-term extension with the national team through to the 2030 World Cup. However, the Italian’s start has been underwhelming, recording five wins, two draws and three defeats across qualifiers and friendlies.

Brazil ended their World Cup qualifying campaign with a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Bolivia and finished fifth in the CONMEBOL standings, 10 points behind rivals Argentina. Their recent 2-1 friendly defeat against France also increased concerns surrounding the Selecao ahead of the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

In preparation for the Panama clash, Brazil’s official X account shared footage from training sessions at Granja Comary under the #BateNoPeito campaign, showing players taking part in gym work, running drills and recovery exercises.

Supporters particularly reacted positively to footage of Neymar appearing relaxed and active during training amid speculation surrounding his fitness.

However, Brazil have now confirmed that Neymar is expected to miss up to three weeks after suffering a calf strain, raising concerns over his availability for the opening stages of the World Cup.

Panama arrive in Rio with growing confidence after securing qualification for just their second-ever FIFA World Cup appearance. Managed by Thomas Christiansen, Los Canaleros have continued progressing in recent years, reaching the finals of both the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup and the 2025 Nations League.

Panama also enjoyed a six-match unbeaten run during the final stage of CONCACAF qualifying and will now test themselves against one of football’s greatest nations at the Maracana.

The Maracana remains one of the most iconic venues in world football and has historically been a fortress for Brazil. The Selecao have recorded dozens of memorable victories at the stadium across multiple generations and tournaments, maintaining one of the strongest home records in international football.

Brazil’s attacking style and emotional connection with supporters at the Maracana often create an intimidating atmosphere for visiting nations, particularly during major international fixtures and tournament preparations.

Recent medical assessments confirmed Neymar suffered a moderate calf strain, ruling him out for approximately three weeks. While the injury is not considered severe, Brazil’s medical staff are expected to carefully manage his workload ahead of the World Cup.

The forward has remained active around the squad environment, participating in light training activities and gym sessions, although explosive movements and full-contact work are currently being limited to avoid aggravating the injury.

Vinicius Junior is expected to lead the attack alongside Matheus Cunha and Raphinha.

Premier League forwards Rayan and Igor Thiago have also earned opportunities following strong club campaigns.

For Panama, captain Anibal Godoy remains doubtful with a knock, while goalkeeper Luis Mejia is battling a muscular issue.

Brazil are expected to dominate possession and chances at the Maracana despite Neymar’s absence. Panama’s organisation and discipline could make periods of the game competitive, but the Selecao’s superior quality should ultimately prove decisive.
