Serge Gnabry is set to miss the FIFA World Cup 2026 after suffering a serious right adductor tendon avulsion during training last week, Softfootball reports. This was announced by transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano on his official X handle.

The FC Bayern Munich winger reportedly tore the muscle while practicing penalties, with an expected recovery period of three to four months. The setback brings his 2025/26 season to an early end and leaves little chance of being ready in time for the tournament.

Romano shared:

OFFICIAL: Serge Gnabry will miss the 2026 World Cup. Injury sustained in training last week will keep him out of the competition. Get well soon!

The latest blow follows Bayern’s earlier confirmation that Gnabry would miss the remainder of the campaign after sustaining a torn adductor injury in his right thigh. What initially appeared to be a significant muscular problem has now developed into a major absence with international consequences.

Gnabry had only recently committed his long-term future to Bayern by signing a contract extension until June 2028, underlining how unfortunate the timing of the injury is for both player and club.

Known for his direct running, pace, and ability to score in key moments, Gnabry has long been an important option for both Bayern and the Germany national football team. His likely absence removes an experienced attacker from Germany’s plans just months before the World Cup begins.

Head coach Julian Nagelsmann may now need to adjust his attacking structure and explore alternative wide options as preparations continue. Germany had hoped to combine experience with younger talents, but Gnabry’s setback creates another challenge ahead of a major competition.

For Bayern, the injury also impacts squad depth during a critical stage of domestic and European ambitions. For Gnabry personally, the immediate focus will now shift fully to rehabilitation and returning fit for the start of next season.
