Tottenham Hotspur has pulled off a major coup in the transfer market, securing the loan signing of Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel until the end of the season, with an option to buy.
The 19-year-old French striker was one of the most sought-after names in the January transfer window, with Arsenal, Manchester United, and Chelsea all vying for his signature. At one point, reports suggested that Tel had rejected Tottenham in favor of a move to Old Trafford, but Spurs ultimately won the race for the highly-rated youngster.
According to The Athletic, Tottenham’s loan agreement includes an option to make the transfer permanent for €55m (£45.7m) this summer. If activated, Tel will commit to a six-year contract with the North London club.
A club statement confirmed the deal, saying: “We are delighted to announce the signing of Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich, subject to international clearance and work permit. The France Under-21 international will join the club until the end of the 2024/25 season with an option to make the move permanent. He will wear the number 11 shirt.”
Tel first gained prominence at Rennes before joining Bayern Munich in 2022, following an impressive Under-17 World Cup campaign. While he has shown glimpses of his talent in Germany—scoring six goals in his debut season and adding ten more last term—his opportunities have been limited under Vincent Kompany, especially with Harry Kane leading Bayern’s attack.
This season, Tel has struggled for game time, making just eight Bundesliga appearances, only two of which were starts, and is yet to score a league goal.
His arrival at Spurs comes amid a challenging period for the club, with injuries affecting key positions. The club has also moved to reinforce its squad by signing goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky from Slavia Prague and center-back Kevin Danso from Lens.
With Tel now part of Ange Postecoglou’s plans, Tottenham will be hoping the young forward can provide the attacking spark they desperately need.
