Rasmus Højlund delivered a match-winning performance in Manchester United’s thrilling 3-2 victory over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League.

The Danish striker scored twice, showcasing his aggression and finishing ability, as new manager Ruben Amorim celebrated his first win at Old Trafford.

United got off to a flying start when Højlund’s pressing forced a mistake from Bodo/Glimt goalkeeper Nikita Haikin, allowing Alejandro Garnacho to score within the opening minute.

However, the Norwegian side responded with goals from Håkon Evjen and Philip Zinckernagel, taking a surprising 2-1 lead.

Højlund equalized just before halftime with an impressive display of control and precision, then netted the winner in the 50th minute, securing three vital points for United.

While Ruben Amorim commended Højlund’s quality, he noted areas where the striker can improve.

“He was aggressive in the box; he is a quality player,” Amorim said. “I think he scores the more difficult goals.

But he has to improve more, especially in holding the ball—sometimes he takes too many touches. When we’re in a low block, he’s crucial for connecting play in transitions, and he did that well today.”

Amorim also emphasized that, like every player, Højlund has room to grow but praised his overall impact in the victory.

Despite the win, Amorim acknowledged lingering issues with United’s possession game, a challenge carried over from Erik ten Hag’s tenure.

“It was a real ride,” Amorim said of the match. “We started very well, but then we conceded two goals from transitions. I could feel the crowd’s tension at 2-1. We’ve struggled in the past with giving the ball away too much, and now the mindset is to keep possession. The players are really trying, and I think we deserved the win.”

Amorim also highlighted the tactical adjustments that allowed Bruno Fernandes to shine in a deeper midfield role.

“You could feel his experience and control of the tempo,” Amorim explained. “When we start play, Bruno is the right man to dictate it.”

“He switches play brilliantly, which was key against their compact back four. He’s better with the goal in front of him, unlike Mason Mount, who had his back to goal a lot in this game.”

Ruben Amorim’s first game as United manager at Old Trafford was a success, but challenges remain.

With a critical focus on possession and Højlund’s development, United aims to build momentum in both domestic and European competitions under their new leader. Fans will be eager to see if Amorim can maintain this early promise as the season progresses.
