Mateta’s recovery on track after shocking FA Cup clash

Jean-Philippe Mateta is making steady progress following a severe ear injury sustained in Crystal Palace’s FA Cup win over Millwall last weekend.

The French striker suffered a brutal challenge from Millwall goalkeeper Liam Roberts, with Palace chairman Steve Parish labeling it the most reckless foul he had ever seen.

Mateta was treated on the pitch before being stretchered off and taken to the hospital, where he received 25 stitches for a deep laceration to his left ear.

Despite the severity of the injury, Mateta avoided fractures or a concussion and has since been discharged. He assured fans on social media that he is recovering well.

Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner confirmed that Mateta will miss the upcoming Ipswich game but could return for the FA Cup quarter-final if his recovery stays on track.

Meanwhile, the FA has challenged Roberts’ three-match ban, insisting it is insufficient given the severity of the challenge, and is seeking an extension.

Millwall, however, is defending their goalkeeper, condemning the online abuse Roberts has received and pledging to fight any additional suspension.

Millwall fans showed their support for Roberts by applauding him in the sixth minute of their match against Bristol City, despite his absence from the squad.
