Manchester United resume talks with Mainoo over new deal

Manchester United have restarted negotiations with Kobbie Mainoo over a new contract as they look to fend off transfer interest from Chelsea. Despite having over two years remaining on his current deal, talks over an extension previously stalled late last year, raising speculation about his future.

That uncertainty saw Chelsea emerge as a potential suitor, with reports suggesting they could make a move if United decided to cash in on their academy gem. Under the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules, selling homegrown players like Mainoo would represent pure profit, potentially aiding United’s squad rebuild under Ruben Amorim.

However, the Daily Mail reports that United have now reengaged with Mainoo’s representatives, signaling their intent to secure his long-term future. The club sees the midfielder as a key player moving forward and is keen to avoid a situation where they must fend off serious offers this summer.

Currently sidelined with an injury, Mainoo is reportedly seeking a pay rise to around £180,000 per week, aligning his salary with other first-team regulars. Given his growing importance in Amorim’s squad, the club may have to meet his demands to ensure he remains a vital part of their project.

Should negotiations break down, United could face renewed interest from several clubs looking to capitalize on the uncertainty. The club has already dealt with strong January interest in Alejandro Garnacho, another prized academy graduate, with Chelsea and Napoli both exploring potential moves.

Despite speculation, United are not actively looking to sell either player, though Amorim has acknowledged the financial realities the club faces. He has emphasized the importance of developing academy talents while also recognizing that tough decisions may need to be made.

Speaking in January, Amorim expressed his admiration for Mainoo and Garnacho while stressing the significance of youth development. He highlighted the importance of producing homegrown talent, both for on-field success and as valuable financial assets.

As United navigate a crucial period in their rebuild, securing Mainoo’s future would be a major step toward stability. With Chelsea and other clubs monitoring the situation, the club must act swiftly to avoid another high-profile academy departure.
