Manchester United have officially confirmed a new contract for veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton, extending his stay at Old Trafford until the end of the 2025-26 season.
At 39, Softfootball understands that Heaton was expected to depart on a free transfer and possibly retire after his previous deal expired in June. However, ongoing uncertainty around the club’s goalkeeping options has prompted United to secure the experienced Englishman for two more years.
Heaton, who began his career in United’s youth system before leaving in 2010, returned to the club in 2021. Despite making just three appearances over four seasons—his last being in 2022-23—his off-pitch influence and professionalism have kept him central to the squad dynamic.
Heaton expressed his pride in continuing with the club, saying:
“I am extremely proud to represent Manchester United. We’re excited about the upcoming season, and I’m ready to support the team in every way as we aim to challenge for top honours.”

Manchester United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, highlighted Heaton’s influence within the squad:
“Tom’s leadership and preparation are invaluable. His readiness and mentality make him a vital part of our goalkeeping unit.”
Although Heaton is expected to remain the third-choice goalkeeper behind Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, his renewed deal speaks volumes about United’s unsettled situation in goal.
Manchester United, according to earlier reports from Softfootball, are actively exploring the transfer market for potential replacements for Andrea Onana, with names like Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa), Diogo Costa (Porto), Andriy Lunin (Real Madrid), and Lucas Chevalier (Lille) being linked.
Given the potential departure of both current goalkeepers, keeping Heaton on board is a strategic move—especially ahead of pre-season, where he could see more action depending on how quickly reinforcements arrive.
