Jamie Carragher Questions Szoboszlai’s Attacking Impact at Liverpool

Jamie Carragher has admitted he isn’t the biggest fan of Dominik Szoboszlai and wants to see more attacking output from the Liverpool midfielder.

Szoboszlai arrived at Anfield in July 2023 for £60 million from RB Leipzig, quickly establishing himself as a key player under Jurgen Klopp.

He made 45 appearances in all competitions during his debut season. Under new manager Arne Slot, the Hungarian remains a regular starter, often playing in an advanced midfield role ahead of Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch.

Despite his physical attributes, Szoboszlai has managed just five goal contributions in 21 Premier League games this season. In contrast, Curtis Jones has recorded six goal involvements despite starting six fewer games and playing 534 fewer minutes.

Carragher, speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate with Sky Bet, compared Szoboszlai’s performances to those of West Ham’s Lucas Paquetá.

“I was commentating on West Ham but kept watching Paquetá, thinking, ‘Oh my,’ every time he controlled the ball,” Carragher said. “I wondered if Liverpool would sign him—Manchester City tried—but his lack of athleticism off the ball might be an issue for a top team.

“With Szoboszlai, I’m not his biggest fan, but he has great athleticism. People say he’s our No.10 and great off the ball, but he’s only scored three goals. He does a great job for the team, but Slot would probably still prefer him over Paquetá.”

Slot himself acknowledged earlier in the season that Szoboszlai needs to be more involved in scoring and creating chances.

“I think something we need to work on is making him more involved in goals and assists,” Slot said last September. “Last season, he scored three league goals, and for an attacking midfielder at Liverpool, his numbers need to improve.”

Liverpool will be back in action on Thursday as they try to overturn a one-goal deficit in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham.
