Fernandez rejects United return as Dorgu deal heats up

Benfica star Alvaro Fernandez has no plans to return to Manchester United during the January transfer window, despite the club exploring options for a left-sided player to fit Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-3 system.

United have placed Lecce’s Patrick Dorgu as their top target, prioritizing a move for the Denmark international.

Lecce, however, demand €40 million (£33.5 million) for the 20-year-old, though United hope to negotiate a lower fee before the window closes on February 3.

As a backup, the club is considering recalling Fernandez, who left United for Benfica last year. Initially a loan deal, the move was made permanent in the summer after Fernandez failed to make a senior appearance at Old Trafford, despite being named the Under-23 Player of the Year in 2022.

The Spain Under-21 international has excelled in the Portuguese league, establishing himself as a first-team regular this season.

United still hold a £15 million buyback clause active until January 2026, but sources close to Fernandez say he intends to finish the season with Benfica.

Unlike the wing-back role United are looking to fill, Fernandez has thrived in a more traditional left-back position, which aligns with Benfica’s setup.

For now, United remain focused on Dorgu. The young defender, signed by Lecce from FC Nordsjaelland for just £175,000, has been pivotal for the Serie A side in their fight against relegation.

Currently sitting 18th, Lecce are reluctant to sell, with club president Saverio Sticchi Damiani emphasizing their intent to retain key players for their survival push.
