Dortmund plan to keep Chukwuemeka as Chelsea eye Gittens

Carney Chukwuemeka’s future may remain in Germany, as Borussia Dortmund express their intention to keep the Chelsea midfielder beyond his current loan. After a short stint with the Bundesliga side, the 21-year-old could be part of a potential transfer exchange between the two clubs this summer.

Chukwuemeka, who joined Dortmund on loan in February, as Softfootball gathered, has only played 373 minutes across 16 matches, mostly appearing from the bench.

Despite limited game time, he has made an impression during Dortmund’s Club World Cup campaign, featuring in all three group-stage matches as a substitute.

On Wednesday, he contributed to Dortmund’s narrow 1-0 win over Ulsan HD, helping them secure a spot in the tournament’s last 16. Following the victory, Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kohl confirmed that the club has communicated to Chelsea their strong desire to retain Chukwuemeka.

Kohl stated that Dortmund are optimistic about securing the player’s services, emphasizing that the club is not looking to downgrade their squad and views Chukwuemeka as a valuable asset.

The situation is further complicated by Chelsea’s own interest in Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens as earlier reported by Softfootball. Talks between both clubs are already underway, with hopes of completing deals for both players after the Club World Cup ends.

As negotiations progress, both clubs seem motivated to strike a deal that satisfies their ambitions—whether it’s strengthening Dortmund’s midfield or securing Gittens for Chelsea’s evolving attack.
