Brighton comeback sinks Fulham despite Iwobi’s assist

Alex Iwobi provided an assist, but it was not enough to prevent Fulham from suffering a 2-1 defeat away to Brighton in Saturday’s Premier League clash. The Nigerian midfielder set up Raul Jimenez’s opener in the 35th minute, but late drama saw Brighton snatch victory in stoppage time.

Iwobi’s contribution marked his fourth assist of the season, adding to his seven goals in 28 league appearances. His Fulham teammate, Calvin Bassey, played the full 90 minutes, while Iwobi was substituted in the final moments of the game.

With this result, Fulham remains in ninth place with 42 points, while Brighton climbed to sixth with 46 points, keeping their European qualification hopes alive. Meanwhile, at Anfield, Liverpool extended their lead over Arsenal to 16 points after coming from behind to defeat bottom-placed Southampton 3-1.

Brighton responded to Fulham’s early lead with a goal from Jan Paul van Hecke just before halftime. The match was ultimately decided in the 98th minute when Joao Pedro converted a penalty to secure all three points for the Seagulls.

Mohamed Salah played a crucial role for Liverpool, scoring twice from the penalty spot, while Darwin Nunez also found the net. The Egyptian forward’s brace took him to 184 career Premier League goals, putting him level with Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero as the joint-fifth top scorer in league history. Salah has now netted 27 times in 29 matches for Arne Slot’s side this season.

Southampton had initially shocked Anfield by taking the lead in first-half stoppage time through Will Smallbone. However, Liverpool equalized in the 51st minute courtesy of Nunez.

Just five minutes later, Salah fired the Reds ahead from the spot before converting another penalty in the 88th minute to seal the victory. Nigerian internationals Paul Onuachu and Joe Aribo were both introduced in the 83rd minute but could not change the outcome.

Elsewhere, Crystal Palace secured a narrow 1-0 win against Ipswich Town at Selhurst Park. Ismaila Sarr scored the decisive goal in the 82nd minute, giving Palace a crucial three points as they continue their push for a strong finish in the league.
