Ben Chilwell Urged to Leave Chelsea Immediately for Career Survival

Ben Chilwell, Chelsea’s once-promising left-back, finds himself at a crossroads after being sidelined by manager Enzo Maresca, leading former Blues defender Celestine Babayaro to advise the 28-year-old to leave Stamford Bridge “for the sake of his career.”

Since joining Chelsea in 2020 for £45 million from Leicester City, Chilwell has played a pivotal role in 107 matches, even lifting the Champions League trophy under Thomas Tuchel. In 2023, he was appointed vice-captain by Mauricio Pochettino, signaling a bright future.

However, the appointment of Maresca last summer changed everything, as the new head coach excluded Chilwell from first-team plans and limited him to a single 45-minute appearance this season in the Carabao Cup against Barrow.

Babayaro, who spent seven years at Chelsea, expressed his disappointment and concern for Chilwell’s stagnation. Speaking to Ladbrokes, he stated, “I love Chilwell; he’s one of my favorite left-backs. But if he’s not getting games here and can’t stay fit, he needs to consider moving on. He’s at a critical stage in his career and must act fast.”

Despite these calls for a transfer, Chilwell faces challenges in securing a move. His high wages and injury history have deterred potential suitors. Everton has shown limited interest, exploring a potential loan move, but only if they terminate Armando Broja’s loan. The Toffees are also linked with Chelsea outcasts Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carney Chukwuemeka, complicating Chilwell’s chances.

England manager Thomas Tuchel, who previously managed Chilwell at Chelsea, would welcome a resurgence from his former player as the national team lacks depth at left-back.

Chilwell, who has 21 England caps and was part of the Euro 2020 runner-up squad, could still play a vital role for the Three Lions if he regains regular game time.

While Maresca has maintained his stance on Chilwell’s exclusion, he has acknowledged the defender’s professionalism and past achievements. “Ben has been top—very professional and hardworking. I feel shame about the situation, but his behavior has been excellent,” Maresca said.

With the January transfer window nearing its close, Chilwell’s future remains uncertain. For now, he continues to train diligently as Chelsea prepares for their upcoming clash against Wolves, but his days at Stamford Bridge seem numbered unless a resolution is found soon.

This pivotal moment in Chilwell’s career could determine whether he remains a key player for club and country or fades further into obscurity.
