Softfootball understands that Arsenal are closing in on a new long-term deal for their wonderkid, Ethan Nwaneri. The teenage playmaker is now expected to commit his future to the club and end speculation over a potential summer exit.
As reported by The Athletic, the 18-year-old, who has just one year left on his current contract, had attracted serious interest from clubs across the Premier League and Europe. But despite the outside attention, Nwaneri’s priority has always been to remain at the club he joined as an eight-year-old.
Talks were unable to begin until he turned 18 in March, but after a spell with the England Under-21s and a short summer break, discussions resumed and are now at an advanced stage.

Nwaneri enjoyed a breakout season under Mikel Arteta in 2024-25, scoring nine goals and registering two assists in 37 appearances across all competitions. The Hale End graduate impressed with his maturity and versatility, frequently covering for Bukayo Saka on the right flank and earning trust in key moments.
Crucially, there were no demands for guaranteed minutes during negotiations, a reflection of the midfielder’s grounded mentality and belief in the project at Arsenal.
While Nwaneri has largely operated in wide areas, the long-term plan is to integrate him more centrally, where he is seen as a natural successor or rotational option for Martin Ødegaard. A formal announcement is expected soon, a major boost for Arsenal’s youth pathway and long-term squad planning.
The deal tabled by Arsenal reflects their commitment to a greater adventure next season. As earlier reported by Softfootball, the Gunners have agreed to a €73.5m transfer fee with Sporting Lisbon for striker Viktor Gyokeres.
The 27-year-old has been a long-term target for the Gunners as they look to fix the striking position after ending last season without a recognisable target man, which forced Arteta to play Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino in that position.
