Antony Shines at Real Betis After United Struggles

Real Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini has praised Antony’s attitude and performances since arriving on loan from Manchester United, with the Brazilian winger thriving in La Liga.

Antony, 24, has made an electric start to his temporary move, netting twice in his first three league games and scoring three times across all competitions.

He has quickly won over the Betis fanbase, finding the net in consecutive 3-0 victories over Gent in the Europa Conference League and Real Sociedad in La Liga.

Pellegrini, who has managed Manchester City and West Ham in the Premier League, appears to be unlocking the talent that struggled to shine under Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.

While the Chilean coach is unsure why Antony flopped in England after his £82m transfer from Ajax, he has been impressed by the winger’s mentality.

“The most important thing has been his attitude and self-criticism,” Pellegrini said. “If Manchester United paid that much for him, it’s because he’s a player of great quality. I don’t know why he couldn’t perform as expected there.

“I’ve spoken to him a lot about staying calm, not trying to do too much, just keeping it simple. He’s a great player who brings a lot to the team, and I hope he continues at this level because he’ll help us a lot.”

Antony himself admits he feels far more comfortable in Spain, where he is enjoying regular game time and a more relaxed environment.

After failing to start a single Premier League game for United this season, the forward has embraced the fresh start.

Speaking to Betis’ in-house media, Antony revealed how much he is relishing life in Spain, attributing his resurgence to the country’s warmer climate and his improved mental state.

“The most important thing is that I’ve found myself again,” Antony said. “I wake up every day with a smile. I’m happy, enjoying my football.

“When we are well, happy, and content, things go well. I’ve scored three goals and provided an assist in four games. I was preparing for this moment mentally and physically, even while I was in England.

“I wasn’t playing much at Manchester United, but I kept working hard. I needed to feel happy again. That was the most important thing.

“I spoke with many players who played here, like Ricardo Oliveira and Denilson. They told me about the incredible support from the fans. I was sure in my heart that coming here was the best decision for me.”

Although Antony remains grateful for his time at United where he won two trophies his comments suggest he would be open to making his stay in Spain permanent if the clubs can reach an agreement.

“I’ve had great moments in Manchester and won two titles, but the people here are more like us in Brazil,” he added. “The sun helps a lot, and I’m very happy here.”

With Antony thriving, Betis will hope to capitalize on his resurgence as they push for European qualification. Whether his future lies in Spain or back in Manchester remains to be seen.
